Lewis in her lifetime was an enigmatic, singular figure, a maker of art in pristine marble. Though highly educated, she allowed the contemporary press to portray her as a naïf savant; though black and female, she succeeded in exhibiting her sculpture alongside the upper crust on both sides of the Atlantic.
Never lost, just hidden in plain sight
Self-taught artist Ben Young creates stunning sculptures of ocean waves and watery landscapes by carefully layering multiple sheets of hand-cut glass.
Things of beauty, a fascination with objects: Ben Young
We bled the nights like we bled our youths
We drowned the pain in what solace was true
We smeared the sky with fury and soot
Defiant we searched
To silence we kept
We gave ourselves to the hunger
An oath to never forget
-R
We live and we die
We speak and we lie
We search for things
That won’t be found
Forgetful and lost
We hope through it all
